Résumé

This study discusses the capability of the constitutive laws for the matrix logarithm of the conformation tensor (LCT model) within the framework of the spectral elements method. The high Weissenberg number problems (HWNP) usually produce a lack of convergence of the numerical algorithms. Even though the question whether the HWNP is a purely numerical problem or rather a breakdown of the constitutive law of the model has remained somewhat of a mystery, it has been recognized that the selection of an appropriate constitutive equation constitutes a very crucial step although implementing a suitable numerical technique is still important for successful discrete modeling of non-Newtonian flows. The LCT model formulation of the viscoelastic equations originally suggested by Fattal and Kupferman is applied for 2-dimensional (2D) FENE-CR model. The Planar Poiseuille flow is considered as a benchmark problem to test this representation at high Weissenberg number. The numerical results are compared with numerical solution of the standard constitutive equation.

The simulation of flows of viscoelastic fluids is a very challenging domain from the theoretical as well as the numerical modelling point of view. In particular, all the existing methods have failed to solve the high Weissenberg number problem (HWNP). It is therefore clear that new tools are necessary. In this thesis we propose to tackle the problem of the simulation of viscoelastic fluids presenting memory effects, which is the first attempt of applying the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to this field for non-trivial flows. A theoretical development of the discrete models corresponding to the equations of mass, momentum conservation and of the constitutive equation is presented as well as the particular treatment of the associated boundary conditions. We start by presenting a simplified case where no memory but shear-thinning or shear-thickening effects are present : simulating the flow of generalized Newtonian fluids. We test the corresponding method against two-dimensional benchmarks : the 2D planar Poiseuille and the 4:1 contraction flows. Then we propose a new model consisting in solving the constitutive equations that account for memory effects, by explicitly including an upper-convected derivative, using the lattice Boltzmann method. In particular, we focus on the polymer dumbbell models, with infinite or finite spring extension (Oldroyd-B and FENE-P models). Using our model, we study the periodic (simplified) 2D four-roll mill and the 3D Taylor-Green decaying vortex cases. Finally, we propose an approach for simulating flat walls and show the applicability of the method on the 2D planar Poiseuille case. Two of the advantages of the proposed method are the ease of implementation of new viscoelastic models and of an algorithm for parallel computing.

The research work reported in this dissertation is aimed to develop efficient and stable numerical schemes in order to obtain accurate numerical solution for viscoelastic fluid flows within the spectral element context. The present research consists in the transformation of a large class of differential constitutive models into an equation where the main variable is the logarithm of the conformation tensor or a quantity related to it in a simple way. Particular cases cover the Oldroyd-B fluid and the FENE-P model. Applying matrix logarithm formulation in the framework of the spectral element method is a new type of approach that according to our knowledge no one has implemented before. The reformulation of the classical constitutive equation using a new variable namely the logarithmic formulation, enforces the eigenvalues of the conformation tensor to remain positive for all steps of the simulation. However, satisfying the symmetric positive definiteness of the conformation tensor during the simulation is the necessary condition for stability; but definitely, it is not the sufficient condition to reach meaningful results. The main effort of this research is devoted to introduce a new algorithm in order to overcome the drawback of direct reformulating the classical constitutive equation to the logarithmic one. To evaluate the capability of the extended matrix logarithm formulation, comprehensive studies have been done based on the linear stability analysis to show the influence of this method on the resulting eigenvalue spectra and explain its success to tackle high Weissenberg numbers. With this new method one can treat high Weissenberg number flows at values of practical interest. One of the worst obstacles for numerical simulation of viscoelastic fluids is the presence of spurious modes during the simulation. At high Weissenberg number, many schemes suffer from instabilities and numerical convergence may not be attainable. This is often attributed to the presence of solution singularities due to the geometry, the dominant non-linear terms in the constitutive equations, or the change of type of the underlying mixed-form differential system. Refining the mesh proved to be not very helpful. In this study, to understand more deeply the mechanism of instability generation a comprehensive study about the growth of spurious modes with time evolution, mesh refinement, boundary conditions and Weissenberg number or any other affected parameters has been performed. Then to get rid of these spurious modes the filter based stabilization of spectral element methods proposed by Boyd was applied with success.

Numerical simulation of sediment dynamics with free surface flows

We present a numerical model for the simulation of 3D mono-dispersed sediment dynamics in a Newtonian flow with free surfaces. The physical model is a macroscopic model for the transport of sediment based on a sediment concentration with a single momentum balance equation for the mixture (fluid and sediments). The model proposed here couples the Navier-Stokes equations, with a volume-of-fluid (VOF) approach for the tracking of the free surfaces between the liquid and the air, plus a nonlinear advection equation for the sediments (for the transport, deposition, and resuspension of sediments). The numerical algorithm relies on a splitting approach to decouple diffusion and advection phenomena such that we are left with a Stokes operator, an advection operator, and deposition/resuspension operators. For the space discretization, a two-grid method couples a finite element discretization for the resolution of the Stokes problem, and a finer structured grid of small cells for the discretization of the advection operator and the sediment deposition/resuspension operator. SLIC, redistribution, and decompression algorithms are used for post-processing to limit numerical diffusion and correct the numerical compression of the volume fraction of liquid. The numerical model is validated through numerical experiments. We validate and benchmark the model with deposition effects only for some specific experiments, in particular erosion experiments. Then, we validate and benchmark the model in which we introduce resuspension effects. After that, we discuss the limitations of the underlying physical models. Finally, we consider a one-dimensional diffusion-convection equation and study an error indicator for the design of adaptive algorithms. First, we consider a finite element backward scheme, and then, a splitting scheme that separates the diffusion and the convection parts of the equation.
