Intermediate magnetization plateaus in the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg models on two-dimensional triangulated lattices

The ground state and zero-temperature magnetization process of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on two-dimensional triangles-in-triangles lattices are exactly calculated using eigenstates of the smallest commuting spin clusters. Our ground-state analysis of the investigated classical-quantum spin model reveals three unconventional dimerized or trimerized quantum ground states besides two classical ground states. It is demonstrated that the spin frustration is responsible for a variety of magnetization scenarios with up to three or four intermediate magnetization plateaus of either quantum or classical nature. The exact analytical results for the Ising-Heisenberg model are confronted with the corresponding results for the purely quantum Heisenberg model, which were obtained by numerical exact diagonalizations based on the Lanczos algorithm for finite-size spin clusters of 24 and 21 sites, respectively. It is shown that the zero-temperature magnetization process of both models is quite reminiscent, and hence, one may obtain some insight into the ground states of the quantum Heisenberg model from the rigorous results for the Ising-Heisenberg model even though exact ground states for the Ising-Heisenberg model do not represent true ground states for the pure quantum Heisenberg model. Simplex solids in SU(N) Heisenberg models on the kagome and checkerboard lattices

We present a numerical study of the SU(N) Heisenberg model with the fundamental representation at each site for the kagome lattice (for N = 3) and the checkerboard lattice (for N = 4), which are the line graphs of the honeycomb and square lattices and thus belong to the class of bisimplex lattices. Using infinite projected entangled-pair states and exact diagonalizations, we show that in both cases the ground state is a simplex solid state with a twofold degeneracy, in which the N spins belonging to a simplex (i.e., a complete graph) form a singlet. Theses states can be seen as generalizations of valence bond solid states known to be stabilized in certain SU(2) spin models.

Highly frustrated magnetic clusters: The kagome on a sphere

We present a detailed study of the low-energy excitations of two existing finite-size realizations of the planar kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the sphere: the cuboctahedron and the icosidodecahedron. After highlighting a number of special spectral features (such as the presence of low-lying singlets below the first triplet and the existence of localized magnons) we focus on two major issues. The first concerns the nature of the excitations above the plateau phase at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization Ms. Our exact diagonalizations for the s = 1/2 icosidodecahedron reveal that the low-lying plateau states are adiabatically connected to the degenerate collinear "up-up-down" ground states of the Ising point, at the same time being well isolated from higher excitations. A complementary physical picture emerges from the derivation of an effective quantum dimer model which reveals the central role of the topology and the intrinsic spin s. We also give a prediction for the low-energy excitations and thermodynamic properties of the spin s = 5/2 icosidodecahedron Mo72Fe30. In the second part we focus on the low-energy spectra of the s > 1/2 Heisenberg model in view of interpreting the broad inelastic neutron scattering response reported for Mo72Fe30. To this end we demonstrate the simultaneous presence of several broadened low-energy "towers of states" or "rotational bands" which arise from the large discrete spatial degeneracy of the classical ground states, a generic feature of highly frustrated clusters. This semiclassical interpretation is further corroborated by their striking symmetry pattern which is shown, by an independent group theoretical analysis, to be a characteristic fingerprint of the classical coplanar ground states.

Quadrupolar Ordering in Two-Dimensional Spin-One Systems

The principal aim of this thesis is to gain a better understanding of the competition between magnetic and quadrupolar degrees of freedom on two-dimensional lattices. Recent experimental investigations of the material NiGa2S4 revealed several anomalous properties that might be accounted for within the framework of quadrupolar ordering. Exhibiting both a ferroquadrupolar and an antiferroquadrupolar phase, the S = 1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice is a possible candidate for describing the low-temperature behaviour of the system. In this work, we put forward a more realistic model that includes single-ion anisotropy. We perform a thorough investigation of the variational phase diagram of this model and we show that it exhibits a variety of unconventional phases. We derive the excitation spectrum of the quadrupolar phases in the phase diagram and we point out that ferroquadrupolar order is particularly sensitive to the nature of anisotropy. Finally, we study quantum effects in the perturbative limit of large anisotropy and we argue that the non-trivial degeneracy of the mean-field solution is lifted by an emergent supersolid phase. We also discuss our results in the context of NiGa2S4. In the second part of the thesis, we aim at gaining an insight into the interplay between geometrical frustration and quadrupolar degrees of freedom by mapping out the phase diagram of the spin-one bilinear-biquadratic model on the square lattice. Our variational approach reveals a remarkable 1/2-magnetization plateau of mixed quadrupolar and magnetic character above the classically degenerate "semi-ordered" phase, and this finding is corroborated by exact diagonalization of finite clusters. "Order-by-disorder" phenomenon gives rise to a state featuring three-sublattice antiferroquadrupolar order below the plateau, which is truly surprising given the bipartite nature of the square lattice. We place particular emphasis on investigating the properties of the SU(3) Heisenberg model, which is shown to feature a subtle competition between quantum and thermal fluctuations. Our results suggest a suppression of two-sublattice Néel order in a finite window below the SU(3) point. Experimental implications for the Mott-insulating states of three-flavour fermionic atoms in optical lattices are discussed.
