Observation of the Decay B-c(+) -> B-s(0)pi(+)

Résumé

The result of a search for the decay B-c(+) -> B-s(0)pi(+) is presented, using the B-s(0) -> D-s(-)pi(+) and B-s(0) -> J/psi phi channels. The analysis is based on a data sample of pp collisions collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb(-1) taken at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and 2 fb(-1) taken at 8 TeV. The decay B-c(+) -> B-s(0)pi(+) is observed with significance in excess of 5 standard deviations independently in both decay channels. The measured product of the ratio of cross sections and branching fraction is inverted right perpendicular sigma(B-c(+))/sigma(B-s(0))inverted left perpendicular x B(B-c(+) -> B-s(0)pi(+)) = inverted right perpendicular2.37 +/- 0.31 (stat) +/- 0.11 (syst)(-0.13)(+0.17) (tau(Bc+))inverted left perpendicular x 10(-3) the pseudorapidity range 2 < eta(B) < 5, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the B-c(+) lifetime. This is the first observation of a B meson decaying to another B meson via the weak interaction.

A study of B-c(+) -> K+K-pi(+) decays is performed for the first time using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Evidence for the decay B-c(+) -> chi(c0)(K+K-)pi(+) is reported with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations, giving sigma(B-c(+))/sigma(B+) x B(B-c(+) -> chi(c0)pi+) = (9.8(-3.0)(+3.4)(stat) +/- 0.8(stat)) x 10(-6). Here B denotes a branching fraction while sigma(B-c(+)) and sigma(B+) are the production cross sections for B-c(+) and B+ mesons. An indication of (b) over barc weak annihilation is found for the region m(K-pi(+)) < 1.834 GeV/c(2), with a significance of 2.4 standard deviations.

A search for the rare decays B-s(0) -> mu(+)mu(-) and B-0 -> mu(+)mu(-) is performed at the LHCb experiment. The data analyzed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb(-1) of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 2 fb(-1) at 8 TeV. An excess of B-s(0) -> mu(+)mu(-) signal candidates with respect to the background expectation is seen with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations. A time-integrated branching fraction of B(B-s(0) -> mu(+)mu(-)) = (2.9(-1.0)(+1.1)) x 10(-9) is obtained and an upper limit of B(B-0 -> mu(+)mu(-)) < 7.4 x 10(-10) at 95% confidence level is set. These results are consistent with the standard model expectations.

The branching fraction is measured to be B((B) over bar (0) -> J/psi K+K-) = (2.53 +/- 0.31 +/- 0.19) x 10(-6), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. An amplitude analysis of the final state in the (B) over bar (0) -> J/psi K+K- decay is performed to separate resonant and nonresonant contributions in the K+K- spectrum. Evidence of the a(0)(980) resonance is reported with statistical significance of 3.9 standard deviations. The corresponding product branching fraction is measured to be B((B) over bar (0) -> J/psi a(0)(980), a(0)(980) -> K+K-) = (4.70 +/- 3.31 +/- 0.72) x 10(-7), yielding an upper limit of B((B) over bar (0) -> J/psi a(0)(980), a(0)(980) -> K+K-) < 9.0 x 10(-7) at 90% confidence level. No evidence of the resonant decay (0) J/psi phi is found, and an upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be B((B) over bar (0) -> J/psi phi)
