Direct photon production at LHCb

At small Bjorken-x, the large gluon number density in the nucleon leads to gluon recombination competing with gluon splitting, which could result in saturation of the gluon PDF. This gluon saturation has yet to be conclusively observed. Direct photon production provides sensitivity to gluon densities in protons and nuclei, and the forward acceptance of LHCb detector allows for measurements of this process at low Bjorken-x, providing an ideal probe of saturation effects. Progress towards the measurement of forward direct photon production using the LHCb detector is presented.

Parton

En physique des particules, le modèle des partons a été proposé par Richard Feynman en 1969 pour décrire la structure des hadrons et modéliser les interactions avec les hadrons à haute énergie. Par la suite, les partons décrits dans ce modèle ont été identifiés aux quarks et aux gluons. cadre|Une particule diffuse sur un hadron à basse (schéma du haut) et à haute (schéma du bas) énergie. À basse énergie seuls les partons de valence peuvent interagir avec la particule.

Plasma quarks-gluons

Le plasma de quarks et de gluons, ou QGP (pour Quark-Gluon Plasma) est un état de la matière qui existe à des températures et/ou des densités extrêmement élevées. Cet état consiste en une « soupe » de quarks et de gluons (presque) libres. Elle diffère en cela des autres états de la matière, comme les solides, les liquides ou les gaz, dans lesquels les quarks et les gluons sont confinés dans les hadrons. Le était sans doute présent dans l'univers durant les microsecondes après le Big Bang.

Gluon

En physique, les gluons sont les bosons de jauge responsables de l'interaction forte. Les gluons confinent les quarks ensemble en les liant très fortement. Ils permettent ainsi l'existence des protons et des neutrons, ainsi que des autres hadrons, et donc de l'univers que nous connaissons. Le substantif masculin « gluon » (prononcé en français standard) est un emprunt à l'anglais en, substantif dérivé de en (« colle ») avec le suffixe en (« -on »).
