Fondation Innovative Medicines for Tuberculosis (iM4TB)

Description

La Fondation Innovative Medicines for Tuberculosis (iM4TB) est une organisation à but non lucratif basée à l'EPFL qui se consacre au développement de médicaments d'action meilleure et plus rapide pour lutter contre toutes les formes de tuberculose. Avec une équipe de chercheurs expérimentés, iM4TB se concentre sur la recherche de nouvelles molécules qui peuvent tuer efficacement la bactérie TB sans nuire aux patients. La Fondation a reçu d'importants fonds, dont une subvention de la Fondation Bill & Melinda Gates, pour soutenir le développement de leur médicament antituberculeux innovant PBTZ169. La mission de l'iM4TB est cruciale dans la lutte mondiale contre la tuberculose, une maladie qui fait trois victimes chaque minute dans le monde.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis var. bovis

Mycobacterium tuberculosis var. bovis – anciennement Mycobacterium bovis – est une variété de bactéries de la famille des Mycobacteriaceae. Comme les autres variétés de Mycobacterium tuberculosis c'est un agent infectieux responsable de la tuberculose humaine. C'est aussi, comme son nom l'indique, l'agent de la tuberculose bovine qui affecte en réalité non seulement les bovins (sauvages ou d'élevage) mais aussi de nombreux mammifères sauvages non bovidés.

Tuberculose

La tuberculose est une maladie infectieuse causée par la bactérie Mycobacterium tuberculosis, qui se transmet par voie aérienne, avec des signes cliniques variables. Elle touche le plus souvent les poumons et peut parfois atteindre d’autres organes. Elle arrive en tête des causes de mortalité d'origine infectieuse à l’échelle mondiale, devant le sida. L'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) rapporte à travers son rapport annuel consacré à la tuberculose et sorti en 2015 que de personnes sont mortes de la tuberculose l’année précédente.
