This lecture covers the three classes of lipids based on their functions: storage lipids, structural lipids, and bioactive lipids. It delves into the structure and properties of fatty acids, including saturated, unsaturated, and polyunsaturated forms. The lecture also discusses the composition and energy storage role of triacylglycerols, as well as their hydrolysis process. Furthermore, it explores other storage lipids like acylceramide, cholesteryl ester, and waxes. Membrane lipids, such as glycerophospholipids and ether lipids, are explained in detail, along with their amphipathic nature and diverse functions. The lecture concludes with a focus on galactolipids found in plant cells and archean membrane lipids adapted to extreme environmental conditions.
