Solar energy

Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed using a range of technologies such as solar power to generate electricity, solar thermal energy (including solar water heating), and solar architecture. It is an essential source of renewable energy, and its technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on how they capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power.

Spatio-Temporal Estimation of Renewable Energy Potential in Built Environments using Big Data

To achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change, governments around the world must shift to renewable energy (RE) to drastically reduce their CO2 emissions within the next 10-30 years. The development of effective strategies for RE integration into national energy systems requires assessing the spatial and temporal availability of these resources at country scale. This spatio-temporal availability is described by the technical RE potential, defined as the maximum electrical or thermal energy that can be obtained from a given technology. While most previous technical potential assessments have used empirical models and geospatial tools to estimate RE potential, the increasing opportunities provided by Big Data and Machine Learning approaches, which extract additional information from large building and environmental datasets, are largely under-exploited. Integrating such data-driven methods with existing models enables national-scale RE resource assessments with higher precision and at higher spatial and temporal resolution than ever before.This work proposes Big Data approaches to estimate renewable energy potentials at national scale, with application to Switzerland. Focusing on the built environment, the technical potentials of Rooftop Solar Photovoltaics (RPV) and shallow Ground-Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) are assessed at the spatial resolution of individual buildings and at hourly (RPV) or monthly (GSHP) temporal resolution. The proposed approaches combine large-scale data processing and Machine Learning with novel computational methods and state-of-the-art models of RE technologies. Furthermore, the quantification and propagation of uncertainties is addressed for RPV. The results are publicly available datasets of RE potentials, which enable spatio-temporal assessments of energy systems with a high share of renewables. At national level, the estimated RPV potential for Switzerland is 25+/-9 TWh, which may increase up to 39 TWh for more optimistic scenarios for solar PV panel installation, or beyond 60 TWh if rooftop-integrated PV is used. The shallow GSHP potential is estimated at up to 97 TWh, of which 20% is located in urban areas. I show that this potential may increase by over 50% through seasonal regeneration from space cooling. Spatial mismatches between supply and demand may be reduced by district heating networks (DHN).These findings have several implications for the Swiss Energy Transition for 2050: (i) To achieve the national target of 34 TWh from PV systems, 50-55% of all nearly flat (< 20° tilt) or south-facing surfaces must be exploited, whereby roofs with a high annual yield should be prioritised; (ii) GSHPs may deliver 30-70% of the heat demand of the targeted 1.5 million heat pumps and contribute significantly to the expansion of DHN in urban areas; (iii) these fractions may be increased through seasonal regeneration, for example from space cooling or excess solar thermal generation. The proposed approaches are transferable to RE potential assessments in other regions or countries, in particular by adapting them to open and cross-country input data, as well as to related RE technologies. The proposed data-driven methods and the publicly available datasets can be used by researchers, practitioners and policy makers to assess future decarbonisation pathways. I hope that this work will contribute to achieving national CO2 emission targets, moving one step closer to the goals of the Paris Agreement.

District energy network potentials in a city territory

Following the Covid crisis and the war in Ukraine, the rise of fossil fuels prices demonstrates the insecurity of the supply in addition to the adverse impact it has on the environment. These crises could lead to a global shift in the strategy of building heating. Renewable systems are promising alternatives to fossil fuel heating system. One of them is the District Heating Network that has the advantages of recovering the waste heat from the industry. In the context of a neutral carbon objective set by the aluminium factory Novelis, the city of Sierre is interested in investigating the possibility of develop- ing a District Heating Network (DHN). This study develops a method to design a network between a heat source and a city, based only on open data building’s inventory. The method, applied to the case study of Sierre, shows that, coupled with heat pumps, the DHN could reduce the heating emissions of the connected buildings, between 88% and 96 % and that 50% of the Novelis’ heat is recovered when half of the city is connected to the network. In addition to that, using new generation of DHN, like CO2 based network makes possible to supply cold with the same infrastructure.

Composition and Interface Engineering of High Performing Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells have been established as a disruptive technology in the domain of photo-voltaics. Their facile, low-temperature processing and high-power conversion efficiency make them stand-out among other mature solar technologies. The performance of perovskite solar cells is pro-foundly tied to an interplay of material properties of singular thin films that are assembled to form the photovoltaic device stack. An understanding of optoelectronic, morphological, and other key charac-teristics of each layer and its interfaces is instrumental in advancing the science of perovskite solar cells. Since their inception after just over a decade, much work on perovskite solar cell has been stag-nant to bring the technology to the market. The long-term stability remains foremostly the main hin-drance to facilitating technology transfer. Therefore, the work presented in this thesis explores multi-ple interface and compositional approaches to promote stability and other photovoltaic parameters of perovskite solar cells.In the second chapter of the thesis, a light-soaking exploration was done on perovskite sam-ples that utilize single (TiO2 and SnO2) and bilayered (TiO2/SnO2) electron transporting materials. The work aims to expand consensus on the optoelectronic and morphological features of light-soaked samples and link them with long-term stability. Upon preliminary testing, maximum power point tracking on each sample reveals efficiency preservation of SnO2 and TiO2/SnO2 samples over the course of 1000 hours while prominent degradation was revealed for the TiO2 sample. On a secondary investigation, light-soaking characterizations were performed where fresh and light-soaked samples were characterized to obtain photoluminescence, microscopic, and crystallographic features. The work reveals the added benefit of employing TiO2/SnO2 transporting bilayers to improve both the stability and power conversion efficiency of a perovskite solar cell. Building on an effort to understand TiO2/SnO2 bilayer behaviors, the third chapter investigates the role of halide passivating elements in SnO2 on the performance of perovskite solar cells. The study utilizes three metalorganic precursors based on acetylacetone complexes with chloride and bromide groups to fabricate SnO2 layers at different annealing temperatures. Upon thermal and elemental in-vestigations, the study clearly links the presence of amorphous halide elements in SnO2 to the power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells. More-in-depth, the optimal SnO2 annealing tempera-ture for bromide containing samples 250 ï°C compared with 220 ï°C for chloride containing samples. The higher temperature tolerance tendency was correlated to bromideâs lower sublimation sensitivity. Overall, the study highlights the importance of amorphous passivating elements in SnO2 for high per-forming planar perovskite solar cells. Finally, the fourth chapter involves a novel cation mixing approach for 2D perovskites at the interface of the 3D perovskite and the hole transporting layer. Alkyl ammonium halides have been widely used to form light-stable 2D perovskite films upon interaction with excess PbI2. In this study, different alkyl chain cations (propylammonium iodide and octylammonium iodide) were mixed in one solution to form a novel 2D perovskite crystal lattice.
