EnclenchementDans le domaine de la signalisation ferroviaire, un enclenchement est un ensemble d'appareils de signalisation qui matérialise physiquement, dans la zone d’action d’un poste d’aiguillage (jonction, croisement de voies...), une incompatibilité de manœuvre entre différents organes de commande d’appareils de voie ou de signaux dans le but de n’autoriser le passage d’un mouvement sur les différents appareils de voie que lorsque toutes les conditions de sécurité nécessaires à ce mouvement sont réalisées.
Poste d'aiguillageUn poste d'aiguillage est un bâtiment d'une gare ou d'un complexe ferroviaire qui rassemble les dispositifs nécessaires permettant de commander des appareils de voie et des signaux. Dans les petites gares le poste d'aiguillage peut se trouver dans le bâtiment voyageurs ou accolé à celui-ci, au niveau du quai. Généralement les postes d'aiguillage sont surélevés afin que les aiguilleurs aient une vision d'ensemble des voies. Les gares importantes disposent souvent de plusieurs postes.

Minimum railway curve radiusThe minimum railway curve radius is the shortest allowable design radius for the centerline of railway tracks under a particular set of conditions. It has an important bearing on construction costs and operating costs and, in combination with superelevation (difference in elevation of the two rails) in the case of train tracks, determines the maximum safe speed of a curve. The minimum radius of a curve is one parameter in the design of railway vehicles as well as trams; monorails and automated guideways are also subject to a minimum radius.
Railroad carA railroad car, railcar (American and Canadian English), railway wagon, railway carriage, railway truck, railwagon, railcarriage or railtruck (British English and UIC), also called a train car, train wagon, train carriage or train truck, is a vehicle used for the carrying of cargo or passengers on a rail transport network (a railroad/railway). Such cars, when coupled together and hauled by one or more locomotives, form a train. Alternatively, some passenger cars are self-propelled in which case they may be either single railcars or make up multiple units.
Positive train controlPositive train control (PTC) is a family of automatic train protection systems deployed in the United States. Most of the United States' national rail network mileage has a form of PTC. These systems are generally designed to check that trains are moving safely and to stop them when they are not. A simplistic form of train traffic governance is negative train control, where trains must stop when issued a stop order and can move in the absence of such. Siding (rail)A siding, in rail terminology, is a low-speed track section distinct from a running line or through route such as a main line, branch line, or spur. It may connect to through track or to other sidings at either end. Sidings often have lighter rails, meant for lower speed or less heavy traffic, and few, if any, signals. Sidings connected at both ends to a running line are commonly known as loops; those not so connected may be referred to as single-ended or dead-end sidings, or (if short) stubs.
Track geometryTrack geometry is concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, curves, and surfaces in the three-dimensional positioning of railroad track. The term is also applied to measurements used in design, construction and maintenance of track. Track geometry involves standards, speed limits and other regulations in the areas of track gauge, alignment, elevation, curvature and track surface. Standards are usually separately expressed for horizontal and vertical layouts although track geometry is three-dimensional.
Structure gaugeA structure gauge, also called the minimum clearance outline, is a diagram or physical structure that sets limits to the extent that bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure can encroach on rail vehicles. It specifies the height and width of platforms, tunnels and bridges, and the width of the doors that allow access to a warehouse from a rail siding. Specifications may include the minimum distance from rail vehicles to railway platforms, buildings, electrical equipment boxes, signal equipment, third rails or supports for overhead lines.
Tramway trackTramway track is used on tramways or light rail operations. Grooved rails (or ) are often used to provide a protective flangeway in the trackwork in city streets. Like standard rail tracks, tram tracks consist of two parallel steel rails. Tram rails can be placed on several surfaces, such as with on sleepers like railway tracks, or with grooved rails on concrete sleepers into street surfaces (pavement) for street running. Tram rails in street have the disadvantage that they pose a risk to cyclists.
