The High-Resolution Magnetic Camera: A Novel Sensor for Eddy Current Testing

Résumé

Eddy current techniques are often used to detect and, in some advanced applications, to characterize fatigue surface-breaking cracks appearing in mechanical parts. One of the major difficulties in this approach is to reliably separate the crack contribution to the signal from the others (liftoff, edge effects, material property variations). This is particularly prominent in weld inspection. We present here a novel sensor consisting in an array of 200 micro-Hall sensors on a CMOS chip aligned over a length of 2 mm with a 10 mu m pitch. This sensor, which we call a "high-resolution magnetic camera", gives a direct measurement of the perturbation of the local magnetic field caused by the modification of the Eddy currents flow due to the surface-breaking crack. We show that using this technique, a crack has a very distinctive signature which can be easily distinguished from all other contributions. Finite element simulations are used to understand the signal response of different cracks. In addition, this system can perform "micro-magnetoscopy" on magnetic materials by giving a fine picture of the local variations of the magnetic field caused by the presence of a defect.

High Bandwidth CMOS Magnetic Sensors Based on the Miniaturized Circular Vertical Hall Device

Hall-effect devices make up by far the largest part of all magnetic sensors on the market today. The main reason is compatibility of Hall devices with modern semiconductor technology. In particular, integrated Hall sensor micro-systems fabricated in low-cost complementary metal oxide technology (CMOS) have dominated the market of magnetic sensors over the last decade. Recently, a new Hall device – the circular vertical Hall device (CVHD) – joined the family of CMOS compatible Hall devices. The CVHD can be biased and Hall voltage retrieved from it such that its output is a sine wave signal. The amplitude of the sine wave signal contains the information on the magnitude of the magnetic field, while the phase of the sine wave signal carries the information on the direction of the magnetic field. This is why a CHVD can be thought of as the first Hall device measuring an in-plane magnetic induction vector. It is due to this feature that the CVHD was first used as a sensing device in magnetic angular sensors. These CVHDs had a large number of contacts leading to a high angular accuracy, but limiting bandwidth of the sensor. This thesis was devoted to exploring and pushing the limits of CVHDs and integrated magnetic sensors based on CVHDs. The first aim of the thesis was to study the limits of bandwidth increase while keeping satisfying accuracy of angular sensors based on the CVHD. In order to increase the angular sensor's bandwidth, we optimized the CVHD, the front end of the sensor comprising the device and interface electronics, and finally the system level topology. The CVHD was ultimately miniaturized to the device containing only eight contacts (8CVHD). The smaller the number of contacts, the faster is obtained the sine wave signal from the CVHD. A novel symmetric Hall voltage retrieval facilitated by the geometry and including all contacts was used. It led to the residual offset voltage comparable with devices having a much larger number of contacts. It was shown that the increase of the sensor's bandwidth is not only limited by the device but also by the interface electronics. This is particularly so because the sensor system relies on the spinning current method for offset reduction. In this case, the interface electronics includes spinning switches and a preamplifier. The spinning current method introduces voltage spikes that decrease accuracy when increasing bandwidth. The modeling of the horizontal Hall device and the interface electronics containing spinning switches and preamplifier was presented. The model was extended for the specific case of the sensors based on the 8CVHD. Three solutions to tackling the challenge of increasing the spinning frequency, or equivalently sensor's bandwidth, while maintaining accuracy were proposed and discussed. The first one is a novel solution relying on the high input capacitance of the preamplifier which together with the sensing switch on-resistance filters out the voltage spikes. The second solution examines the partial guard band to remove a part of the spikes' energy without compromising the high spinning frequency. The third solution is based on the cancellation of the voltage spikes by the time-shifted clockwise and counterclockwise spinning current method on two pairs of devices. These solutions were employed in three different sensors based on the 8CVHD. On the system level, a novel concept of the angular sensor based on two 8CVHDs was used. The outputs of the 8CVHDs are separately processed in two channels and they act as mutual reference signals. The Hall voltage retrieval is done in the clockwise direction for the first device, and in the counter clockwise direction for the second one. In this way there is no need for the reference signal as in the known concept. The use of two devices doubles the sensitivity of the sensor. Finally, the optimized device, the solutions for the design of interface electronics, and the system level topology were combined in two implementations in 0.35 µm CMOS technology. The first implementation employed one 8CVHD per channel. The average angular error was found to be ± 4° with the sensor's bandwidth of about 300 kHz. The second implementation employed an array of 8CVHDs per channel. The average angular error was found to be ± 1.5° with the sensor's bandwidth of about 500 kHz. The second aim of the thesis was to investigate the feasibility of magnetic sensors based on the 8CVHD for some challenging applications. To this end a two-dimensional (2D) magnetometer and a magnetic sensor for use in open-loop current transducer were designed and experimentally characterized. The novel system level concept for the 2D CMOS integrated magnetometer based on the 8CVHD was proposed. It enables common biasing, signal retrieval, dynamic cancellation of offset and low frequency noise, and front-end signal conditioning electronics for both components of the measured in-plane magnetic field vector. Separation of two channels is postponed to the point where signal levels are high and less susceptible to nonidealities and mismatches of signal conditioning electronics. The magnetometer features bandwidth around 60 kHz, wide dynamic range 0-1.5 T, high spatial resolution, and a high measurement resolution of 300 µT over frequency range 0-30 kHz. The magnetic sensor for the open-loop current transducer is based on the high bandwidth angular sensor and a tangent converter circuit. The initial experimental verification showed the bandwidth around 100 kHz, along with a wide dynamic range and good linearity.

Spin dependent thermoelectric effects in magnetic nanostructures

The aim of this thesis work was to obtain a deeper understanding of spin-dependent transport by the study of mixed effects of heat and charge currents in magnetic nanostructures. Indeed, even thermodynamics establish a relationship between both currents, no previous works were performed in this sense up to now. In order to do this, an original experimental setup was developed which allows to carry out a novel transport measurement called the thermogalvanic voltage (TGV). It measures the AC voltage response of the sample driven by an oscillatory variation of the temperature induced by a chopped laser beam focused on the nanostructure under a direct current flow. The main advantage of this new experimental setup is that it can be used to perform three different transport measurements: resistance, thermoelectrical power and TGV measurements. Furthermore, the well-defined junctions of our magnetic nanowires, in addition to the lock-in detection of signals, allows to obtain a better quality of thermoelectrical measurements than those observed by other groups. Different kind of magnetic nanowires like ferromagnetic/non-magnetic multilayers and ferromagnetic homogeneous nanowires were studied by these three different transport measurements. All these nanowires were 6μm in length and 50nm in diameter. All TGV measurements reveal a linear dependence with currents. This behaviour can be interpreted in terms of adiabatic conductivity for homogeneous nanowires and in terms of Peltier effect for multilayer nanowires produced in ferromagnetic/non-magnetic interfaces. Furthermore, the magnetic field dependence of TGV (MTGV) cannot be accounted for by GMR and MTEP effects. Therefore, a novel spin-dependent mechanism is invoked in such measurements. A simple phenomenological model, ascribed in the framework of thermodynamics of irreversible processes, was developed to explain this effect. It allows to identify this phenomena to a novel spin-dependent variable: The asymmetry of spin-mixing mechanisms (ΔL). This variable will be related to the difference of transition rates between both spin channels (τ-1+- and τ-1-+) developed in ferromagnetic material due to electron-magnon interactions. A large magnetic field dependence of TGV signals were observed in magnetic granular systems. Moreover, MTGV shows a different dependence from GMR on magnetic field, grain size and temperature. This effect is identified as a spin-mixing mechanism produced by the electron spin precession about the magnetic grain moments.

Modern applications in industry, navigation and medicine demand small and sensitive magnetic field sensors. In this thesis we have developed a new planar micro fluxgate magnetometer. High resolution, low power consumption and orthogonal fields detection makes it suitable for portable compass applications. The developed sensor is a fully integrated device based on CMOS process that provides driving and readout electronics, plus the metallization layers for the excitation and pickup coils. A soft amorphous ferromagnetic material is bonded and structured, using an additional, postprocess implemented on a whole 6 inch wafer to form sensor core on the surface of the chip. The single core principle was selected with the intention to elongate the core, reduce the power consumption and increase sensitivity. We employed a new extraction method, based on the detection of mean value of the induced voltage peaks in the pickup coil, which carry the information on the external field. Several models and tools for the optimization of the core geometry, excitation, as well as pickup coils have been developed. For the first time, the effect of perming has been investigated. Perming is manifested as a change in sensor offset after the magnetic shock. A model was developed, which uses equivalent magnetic pole pieces to account for the contribution of the "frozen" domains not affected by the excitation. Model shows that the effect is predominantly dependent on the level of the core saturation. The electronics has been integrated in a conventional 1 µm CMOS process. Apart from the excitation, a single electronic circuit is used for both axes in order to decrease the power consumption, reduce the chip size, and obtain better matching. The signal extraction principle is accomplished using a box-car circuit. To reduce the influence of the 1/f noise of the amplifiers, we implemented a modulation technique, using an additional modulator. Modulated signal is amplified and finally demodulated using the correlated double sampling demodulator. We have implemented a new digital feedback, for the first time applied on the excitation coils. It consists of comparator, 8-bit U/D counter and current sources to create magnetic field for contra action. The output of the counter represents the digital information on the external field and is transmitted using I2C communication block integrated on chip. The fabricated sensor works from a single 2.5 V power supply and consumes 8.5 mW in open loop mode and 10 mW with a feedback. With the excitation at 350 kHz, the magnetometer exhibits the sensitivity of 2950 V/T and 8 kHz bandwidth. Equivalent noise spectral density at 1 Hz is equal to 12 nT/√Hz. When used as a compass, the sensor has the angular error of ± 1° without and ± 3° using feedback. Measured perming is equal to 1.4 µT, after the shock of 200 mT. Performance of the developed micro-fluxgate is better in terms of noise, angular error, perming, operational voltage, as well as power consumption, than any other fully integrated micro fluxgate presented up to date. In addition, the fabrication is based on the batch and low cost CMOS technology and compatible post-process so we can expect commercialisation in the near future.
