How important are the residual nonadiabatic couplings for an accurate simulation of nonadiabatic quantum dynamics in a quasidiabatic representation?

Diabatization of the molecular Hamiltonian is a standard approach to remove the singularities of nonadiabatic couplings at conical intersections of adiabatic potential energy surfaces. In general, it is impossible to eliminate the nonadiabatic couplings entirely—the resulting “quasidiabatic” states are still coupled by smaller but nonvanishing residual nonadiabatic couplings, which are typically neglected. Here, we propose a general method for assessing the validity of this potentially drastic approximation by comparing quantum dynamics simulated either with or without the residual couplings. To make the numerical errors negligible to the errors due to neglecting the residual couplings, we use the highly accurate and general eighth-order composition of the implicit midpoint method. The usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated on nonadiabatic simulations in the cubic Jahn–Teller model of nitrogen trioxide and in the induced Renner–Teller model of hydrogen cyanide. We find that, depending on the system, initial state, and employed quasidiabatization scheme, neglecting the residual couplings can result in wrong dynamics. In contrast, simulations with the exact quasidiabatic Hamiltonian, which contains the residual couplings, always yield accurate results.

High-order geometric integrators for nonadiabatic molecular quantum dynamics and their applications to explore conical intersections

Accurate simulations of molecular quantum dynamics are crucial for understanding numerous natural processes and experimental results. Yet, such high-accuracy simulations are challenging even for relatively simple systems where the Born-Oppenheimer approximation is valid. Worse still, due to the ubiquity of conical intersections in molecules, it is often necessary to go beyond this celebrated approximation and employ even more sophisticated methods that can describe nonadiabatic processes involving multiple coupled electronic states.Geometric integrators provide a way to simulate nonadiabatic quantum dynamics with high accuracy while exactly conserving geometric properties, such as norm, energy, symplecticity, and time reversibility. However, the exact conservation of these properties typically leads to a higher computational cost when compared with non-geometric integrators of the same order of accuracy. We remedy this lack of efficiency by employing various composition methods to obtain high-order geometric integrators, competitive in efficiency even with some non-geometric integrators.To overcome the limited applicability of the popular split-operator algorithms, we present geometric integrators that can solve the time-dependent Schroedinger equation efficiently regardless of the form of the Hamiltonian. Employing these integrators, we systematically compare the different representations of the molecular Hamiltonian for their suitability for simulating nonadiabatic dynamics at a conical intersection and find that the rarely used exact quasidiabatic Hamiltonian, which includes the often-neglected residual nonadiabatic couplings, yields the most accurate results. Accordingly, we present a method for quantifying the validity of ignoring these residual couplings and show that depending on the system, initial state, and employed quasidiabatization scheme, neglecting the residual couplings can indeed result in inaccurate dynamics.The computational cost of exact quantum simulations quickly becomes prohibitively high as the system size increases. For high-dimensional simulations, one can either optimize the available basis set, e.g., by employing adaptive phase space grids or, alternatively, employ a more approximate approach, such as mixed quantum-classical Ehrenfest dynamics, that provides a useful qualitative picture. Although Ehrenfest dynamics and exact quantum dynamics simulated on an adaptive grid may appear unrelated, we show that, surprisingly, the high-order geometric integrators for these two problems can, in fact, be obtained by using the same splitting and composition methods.

An Atomistic Simulation Method for Oxygen Impurities in Aluminium Based on Variable Charge Molecular Dynamics

Impurities are known to have a significant impact on materials properties. In particular, the presence of impurities can change mechanical properties and stabilize the microstructure by reducing grain growth and recrystallization processes. In the past atomistic simulations, in particular molecular dynamics, have contributed a lot to the understanding of deformation mechanisms in nanocrystalline metals. Especially, insights into details of dislocation/GB interactions have been gained. Additionally, simulations on coupled grain boundary migration in bicrystalline samples have played an important role in understanding stress assisted grain growth in nanocrystalline metals. However, all these simulations have been performed on monatomic systems. This means that the role of impurities has not yet been considered in these simulations. Some of the important difference between experiments and simulations could be removed by introducing dilute O distributions to computational Al samples. For this purpose, a simulation method is required which can deal with the oxidation of Al atoms around the O impurities and which can simulate the ionic and metallic nature of bonding simultaneously. Here, a method is suggested which fulfills the requirements by modifying the variable charge method of Streitz and Mintmire [Phys. Rev. B 50, 11996 (1994)]. A local chemical potential approach which optimizes the charge on only those atoms expected to be ionic is developed. Additionally the EAM potential for the non-electrostatic interaction given in the publication of Streitz and Mintmire is substituted by empirical potentials which treat the Al-Al interactions with a well-known Al potential. The Al-O and O-O interactions in these EAM potentials are fitted for the simulation of dilute O impurities in Al and additionally for the simulation of corundum in case of a second potential. The aforementioned developments are applied to study the effect of O impurities on the deformation of nc Al. A fully three-dimensional nc sample containing 15 grains of 12 nm grain-size is deformed with a dilute O content in the triple junction lines. The impact of O impurities on dislocation propagation is also considered in a sample which consists of a single grain extracted from a large molecular dynamics simulation. This simulation geometry contains a perfect dislocation, which is pinned at the surrounding grain boundary network. Therefore it allows the study of pinning strength and after unpinning the propagation behavior of the dislocation under various O impurity distributions. Additionally, the role of O impurities on coupled GB migration is investigated by studying two bicrystalline samples with different O distributions in both of them. In the discussion, the emphasis is on the simulation method. Especially, the significance of the samples, simulation conditions and the performance of the method in the different applications are discussed. Additionally, the different developments (local chemical potential approach and EAM potentials) are critically analyzed and improvements for future simulations of impurities are suggested.

Helium atoms are known to have a significant impact on materials used in fission and fusion reactors. In particular, the presence of helium atoms can change the mechanical properties and degrade the lifetime of reactors. In order to develop the helium-resistance materials, the underlying interactions between helium atoms and matrix atoms have to be understood. In the past, atomistic simulations have contributed a lot to the basic energy states of helium atoms in different defects of materials. Especially, insights into the formation energies of helium atoms at simple defects have been calculated by ab initio and molecular dynamics. The substitional helium has lower formation energy than the tetrahedral and octahedral interstitial helium atom. Additionally, the binding energies of helium with small HenVm cluster have also been found to be all positive. However, all these simulations have been performed without showing the kinetic formation process of such helium defects. The interactions of defect with larger number of helium atoms are also not explored in detail. In the first part of this thesis, a new relaxation-fitting method has been developed for cross potential of Fe-He system based on more energy data of helium-defect clusters from ab initio calculations and by including the migration energy of single free helium atom in the fitting process. Besides, the recently fitted magnetic potentials of Fe have been used to describe the Fe-Fe interactions for such cross potential. The new fitted Fe-He potentials have predicted well not only the properties of simple helium defect, but also the properties of helium clusters and diffusion process of helium atoms. Based on the new Fe-He potentials, the interactions between helium atoms and Fe with the effect of single vacancy have been simulated utilizing the classical molecular dynamics (MD) method in the single bcc Fe lattice at room temperatures by helium atoms up to 18. The binding energies of helium atom with HenV cluster are computed. By increasing number of helium atoms, the binding energy decreases first, then slowly increases up to n = 4. It is then almost constant between n = 5 to 15 but increases strongly at n = 16 to form a peak. This last increase is related to the athermal self-interstitial atom (SIA) emission in the form of dumbbell which relaxes the restrained system to He16V2 cluster. The second binding energy peak occurs at n = 18 by the formation of the second SIA to form He18V3 cluster. Close inspection of the local configuration shows the formed SIA combines with the helium-defect cluster. Calculation of the pressure of the helium-defect cluster shows local peak normal stress and shear stress values up to 9 GPa and 4 GPa, respectively. The local configurations of helium-defect cluster suggest that with increasing helium content, some symmetrical structures can be formed. By increasing the number of helium atoms inserted in single bcc Fe lattice, the clustering process of the formed SIAs with presence of helium cluster has been simulated with MD methods at room temperatures with the new fitted Fe-He potential. The first SIA is formed after 6 He atoms being inserted without vacancy. The simulations indicate that the SIA has mainly two configurations as either a dumbbell or a crowdion, which can be exchanged in the interface between helium bubble and matrix atoms. The SIA cluster can change direction and absorb more SIAs to grow. Small dislocation loops have been observed to form with Burgers vector b = 1/2 a0 on a {111} habit plane. The kinetic process of formation and growth of dislocation loop explored by MD simulations includes: (1) the formation of a self-interstitial atom by the high pressure of the helium cluster/bubble; (2) the diffusion of these self-interstitial atoms on the interface between helium bubble and matrix; (3) the clustering of the self-interstitial atoms in the form of a dislocation loop and its diffusion away from bubble when the number of SIAs in loop reaches a critical number. Moreover, the effect of grain boundary (GB) on the formation of helium clusters has been explored with MD simulations in symmetrical GBs and normal nano-grain boundary samples. Helium atoms can be trapped by GBs at free spaces. The local atomic excess free volume (LAEFV) is found to the one of the main parameters not only related with the energy state of GB but also with the nucleation and growth of He atoms in the GB.
