Heuristic evaluation

A heuristic evaluation is a usability inspection method for computer software that helps to identify usability problems in the user interface design. It specifically involves evaluators examining the interface and judging its compliance with recognized usability principles (the "heuristics"). These evaluation methods are now widely taught and practiced in the new media sector, where user interfaces are often designed in a short space of time on a budget that may restrict the amount of money available to provide for other types of interface testing. Introduction The main goal of heuristic evaluations is to identify any problems associated with the design of user interfaces. Heuristics for the Development and Evaluation of Educational Robotics Systems

Contribution: While previous research has studied the use of educational robotics in classrooms, there is still a lack of methods to support the development and evaluation of such tools. To this end, this paper presents an evaluation framework and a corresponding set of heuristics, which are specifically adapted to the needs and expectations in formal education settings. Background: The increased usage of educational robots in classrooms, as well as the steadily growing number of alternatives to choose from, raises the question of finding appropriate methods for the development and evaluation of such tools. Yet the current body of literature does not provide comprehensive frameworks that allow to adequately address this question. Intended outcomes: The work aims at providing an evaluation framework, which could support researchers and engineers, as well as educators and decision makers in taking informed decisions about educational robotics systems. Application design: This paper proposes to consider activities involving educational robotics systems as a kind of “educational augmented tabletop game”. Within this framework, a set of fourteen heuristics was devised based on literature about games and learning tools. The validity of the devised heuristics was examined with a heterogenous group of twelve compulsory school teachers, who tested five different educational robotics systems. Findings: The experimental results illustrated high approval for the devised heuristics by the participating teachers. A heuristic evaluation based on the proposed framework appeared to be more appropriate to reflect the teachers’ needs than conventional methods, i.e., the isolated comparison of system characteristics.

Decoding of error-related potentials in continuous feedback protocols for personalized human computer interaction

The ability to notice erroneous behavior is crucial for effective training. Within the framework of neuroprosthetics, numerous studies in electroencephalography (EEG) confirm the existence of neural correlates when humans perceive the erroneous actions of the device. Subsequently, the decoding of this correlate has been used to correct the erroneous behavior performed by the agent or to tune the behavioral strategy of the agent, among others. However, a main limitation of current approaches is that the actions of the agent were discretized, thus restraining the usability of such systems. The main objective of this PhD study is to study, and decode, the neural correlates of error evaluation under continuous trajectories performed by external agents; and to use this decoding to tune the continuous behavior of the agent for individual users. To accomplish this goal, two essential questions will be investigated: (i) whether it is possible to infer individual preference under continuous state-action scenarios, and (ii) how to create a reliable decoding pipeline in a continuous fashion. Results obtained during the first year of the PhD have confirmed the existence of such correlates under continuous motions of a robotic arm. Furthermore, such correlates encode individual preferences, indicating that the neural prosthesis can be also customized for individual users, which may play an important rule to increase the quality of brain-computer based assistance. This property not only will increase the level of perceived assistance provided by a brain-computer interface, but also may facilitate embodiment of the brain-controlled device.

Aligning the Design of Educational Robotics Tools With Classroom Activities

This chapter addresses the alignment of educational robotics (ER) tools with classroom activities. To this end, it first introduces a conceptualization of ER activities describing the relevant cognitive artifacts and the learning theories underlying such activities. Based on this conceptual framework, a set of design and evaluation heuristics are presented, aimed at supporting developers and educators in aligning ER tools with classroom activities and vice versa. The heuristics were elaborated in several focus groups with 35 developers and educators experienced in the domain. To evaluate the methodology in authentic contexts, two case studies with groups of developers will be presented. Moreover, to illustrate the usefulness from an educator's point of view, another example will be presented in which the devised methodology was used to guide the design of an ER classroom activity.
